In Kempo—and in life—everything starts with a strong foundation. Imagine trying to build a house on loose sand. No matter how well-designed it is, it won’t hold up for long. The same is true in martial arts: if your stance isn’t solid, everything else—your power, balance, and technique—falls apart.

At Integrity Martial Arts, we don’t just think of stances as something you learn at white belt and move past. They’re the backbone of everything we do. Understanding and refining your stances will make you a stronger martial artist, no matter your level.

Why Stances Matter

A strong stance gives you stability, balance, and control. Whether you’re throwing a punch, blocking an attack, or shifting out of the way, your stance determines how efficiently you move.

If your stance is too weak, you’ll feel off-balance, slow to react, and easy to knock off course. But when your stance is strong and intentional, everything clicks—your movements flow naturally, your strikes land with more force, and your defenses become second nature.

Think of your stance as your power source. A well-placed stance allows you to channel energy through your whole body, maximizing the impact of your techniques. Even a small misalignment—like a misplaced foot or uneven weight distribution—can sap your power and leave you vulnerable.

Balancing Strength and Mobility

Some people think that the lower and wider the stance, the better. And while deep stances do build leg strength and discipline, they aren’t always practical in real-world situations.

In training, we practice deep stances to build endurance and control. But in sparring or self-defense, being able to move quickly and adapt is just as important. A rigid stance might feel powerful, but if it keeps you stuck in place, it’s working against you. The goal is to find a balance—rooted when you need stability, mobile when you need to move.

Common Stance Mistakes (And How to Fix Them!)

Even experienced martial artists slip into bad stance habits. Here are some of the biggest mistakes and how to fix them:

Leaning Too Far Forward or Back – Keep your weight evenly distributed so you can move in any direction without delay. If you’re leaning, you’re an easy target.

Relying Too Much on One Leg – Both legs should be engaged. If you’re favoring one side too much, your movements become predictable, and your structure weakens.

Ignoring Your Core – Stances aren’t just about your legs! Engage your core for extra stability and control.

Feet Too Close Together – A narrow stance makes it easy to lose balance. Give yourself a solid base while staying flexible enough to move.

Simple Drills to Strengthen Your Stances

Want to improve your stance? Try these drills:

Horse Stance Holds – Hold a deep horse stance for 30 seconds, then a minute, then longer. Feel the burn in your legs? That’s strength building.

Stance Transitions – Flow smoothly between different stances—forward, back, side—while keeping your balance.

One-Legged Stance Training – Stand on one foot for extended periods to improve balance and core strength. Try closing your eyes for an extra challenge!

Weighted Stance Training – Hold a small weight (or even just a book!) while practicing stances to build lower-body strength and reinforce posture.

More Than Just a Physical Skill

At the end of the day, stances in Kempo aren’t just about technique—they’re about discipline, patience, and control. The way you hold a stance under pressure reflects your ability to stay steady in the face of challenges, both in training and in life.

Just like a well-practiced stance lets you react effectively in combat, a strong foundation in discipline, focus, and perseverance will help you handle whatever life throws your way.

Final Thoughts

Your stance is the first thing you learn in martial arts—and it’s something you’ll keep refining no matter how advanced you become. The stronger your foundation, the better your techniques, speed, and power will be.

So next time you are training, take a moment to check in with your stance. Is it strong? Is it stable? Can you move from it easily?

Because in martial arts, as in life, everything starts from the ground up.

As the calendar turns, many feel inspired to make big changes. But in Kempo—and life—true progress comes from refining what we’ve already learned. Each stance, strike, and form builds on the foundations of balance, awareness, and discipline.

The Power of Refinement

Mastery lies in the basics. Small adjustments—a sharper stance, a smoother transition—can transform your practice. Whether you’re a long-time student or new to the dojo, this season is about patience, precision, and growth.

Consistency Over Resolutions

Lasting habits come from small, achievable goals:

Commit to one extra practice a week.

Refine one technique each day.

Reflect on each training session.

Every repetition builds strength and resilience.

New to Kempo? Start Strong

Joining now means growing alongside a community focused on intentional progress. Martial arts are more than self-defense—they cultivate resilience, confidence, and calm in the face of challenges.

Your Journey, Your Strength

In 2025, move with purpose. Whether you’re refining or just starting, each step shapes your future. Strengthen your foundation, embrace growth, and step forward with confidence.

Celebrating Jack Santillo’s Dedication, Discipline, and Embodiment of Kempo’s Core Values

As parents, we are filled with immense pride and joy as we celebrate an extraordinary milestone achieved by our son, Jack Santillo. After more than 12 years of unwavering commitment to his martial arts journey, Jack has earned his black belt in Kempo. This accomplishment reflects Jack’s hard work, discipline, and embodiment of the values we hold dear at our dojo: learning, integrity, and service.

Jack’s Martial Arts Journey

Jack’s journey began at the age of three in our martial arts schools in the United States. Over the years, we’ve watched him hone his skills, deepen his understanding of Kempo, and grow into a remarkable young man. Since moving to Dungarvan, Jack has continued his training and development here at Integrity Martial Arts, where he trains alongside our wonderful students and assists in teaching classes.

The Philosophy Behind Kempo

More than just physical skill, Jack’s promotion to Black Belt highlights the mental and emotional development fostered through Kempo. The discipline is about much more than self-defense—it’s a philosophy that shapes character, builds resilience, and inspires service to others. Jack exemplifies all these traits in his everyday life.

Jack’s Role at Integrity Martial Arts

In addition to his training, Jack has become an integral part of our dojo community. He regularly assists in teaching classes, inspiring younger students with his leadership, patience, and passion for martial arts. We couldn’t be prouder of the example he sets for others.

A Message from Sensei

“Kempo isn’t just about physical development—it’s about shaping the whole person,” Chris says. “Jack embodies everything we strive to teach: a thirst for knowledge, unwavering integrity, and a heart for service. We couldn’t be prouder of the person he’s becoming.”

Inspiration for the Community

Jack’s journey from novice to Black Belt reflects over a decade of perseverance, hard work, and a commitment to bettering himself and those around him. He serves as an inspiration to students of all ages at Integrity Martial Arts and a role model for the principles that Kempo represents.

At Integrity Martial Arts in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, humility and pride are at the core of our training philosophy. These qualities work hand-in-hand, guiding students toward personal growth. True humility is about acknowledging opportunities for improvement, while pride, grounded in genuine effort, builds confidence. Together, they foster respect, self-discovery, and growth in the practice of martial arts.

Understanding Humility and Pride

Humility is often misunderstood as minimizing accomplishments. At its core, humility means recognizing that growth is always possible. It’s reflected in actions that show respect for oneself and others.

In contrast, pride stems from effort and progress. The most meaningful pride comes from within, as a result of challenging yourself to be better. Integrity Martial Arts focuses on cultivating this balance, helping students achieve authentic pride without arrogance.

Example: Alex and Mia’s Stories

Imagine Alex, a 10-year-old, racing younger children. She wins easily but doesn’t feel proud because she didn’t push her limits. True pride would come from striving to improve her personal best, not from an easy victory.

Now, picture Mia, a 5-year-old, running against older children. She finishes last but gives her best effort and improves her time. Despite her placement, Mia feels pride in her progress and effort. This is the essence of martial arts training at Integrity Martial Arts: focusing on personal growth and effort, not comparison.

How Integrity Martial Arts Teaches Humility and Pride

Our training emphasizes two core principles:

Do your best every time.

Strive to improve beyond your previous efforts.

This approach teaches students to focus on their journey rather than comparing themselves to others. At Integrity Martial Arts, every student is encouraged to set personal goals and celebrate their progress.

Practicing Martial Arts at Integrity Martial Arts

In every class at Integrity Martial Arts, students experience the balance of humility and pride. Martial arts training fosters self-discipline, respect, and perseverance. Through Kempo, students learn to stay humble, respect their peers, and find pride in their personal growth.

Located in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, our dojo is a welcoming environment for students of all ages and skill levels.

This post explores the power of preparedness in martial arts practice and how it can help us reframe challenges as opportunities for growth. By recognizing that tasks are not inherently easy or difficult but rather depend on our level of preparedness, we can develop a growth mindset that empowers us to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Through refining our techniques, seeking guidance from instructors, and dedicating more time to practice, we can unlock our full potential both on and off the mat.

Martial arts is so much more than just learning how to defend yourself. It’s a journey of self-discovery, discipline, and perseverance that molds both your body and your mind; it’s about repeatedly failing before finally achieving success. I’m talking about developing the ability to overcome challenges and grow as an individual.

One of the most important things to understand when training is that tasks aren’t necessarily easy or difficult, and it’s all about being prepared or not yet ready. This key mindset empowers martial artists to develop the resilience and determination needed to accomplish anything.

Preparedness is a major factor in determining how difficult you perceive a task to be. When you’ve practiced sufficiently, what once seemed insurmountable becomes manageable and even easy. The task itself hasn’t changed; you have grown and acquired the skills and confidence necessary to handle the challenge at hand. It’s all about a growth mindset, seeing obstacles as opportunities to improve, and realizing that you just need more practice and preparation to conquer them.

When you come across a challenge that seems too difficult, don’t get frustrated. Instead, recognize that you’re not quite ready to tackle it and adjust your approach accordingly. This may involve seeking guidance from your instructors, dedicating more time to practice, or shifting laterally to work around the problem and/or gain the experience necessary to eventually overcome it.

So keep pushing yourselves, keep growing, and keep achieving your goals. We’re here to support you every step of the way.

How Combining Practicing to the Air, with a Punching Bag, and with a Partner Can Help You Reach Your Goals

Martial arts is a fantastic way to improve your fitness, develop your skills, and achieve your goals. However, simply practicing techniques and movements is not enough. To truly excel in the martial arts, you need a well-rounded skill set and a balanced approach to training. Here, let’s focus on three crucial components of your training.

We believe that the key to martial arts success is combining three complementary training methods: practicing to the air, with a punching bag, and with a partner. Let’s take a closer look at each of these methods:

Practicing to the Air: This type of training involves performing techniques and movements without any equipment or targets, allowing you to focus on extension, follow-through, and precise technique. It’s safe, easy to do, and can be done anywhere, making it an ideal option for at-home training.

Practicing with a Punching Bag: This method is excellent for developing power and strength, as well as conditioning the striking surfaces to prevent injury. Whether you use a punching bag, focus mitts, or similar, this type of training provides resistance, making it a great workout and an essential part of any martial arts training regimen.

Practicing with a Partner: This type of training gives you a more realistic sense of targets and how the body responds to force, allowing you to practice techniques with an opponent in a controlled environment. However, it’s important to train slowly and with less power to ensure safety.

By incorporating all three training methods into our curriculum, we help our students develop the well-rounded skill set they need to succeed in the martial arts. Each method offers unique benefits, such as refining technique, developing power and conditioning, and enabling realistic application of techniques, to help students achieve their fitness and martial arts goals. With this combination of training methods, students will acquire the skills and abilities necessary for success both inside and outside the dojo.

Striking the Right Balance Between Working Hard and Avoiding Injury

Finding the right balance in our workouts can be a challenge. We want to push ourselves hard enough to see results, but not so hard that we risk injury. This is where the concept of the “Shaolin Crane” can be helpful. In Shaolin Kempo, the Crane symbolizes balance, and finding balance in our workouts is key to achieving optimal results.

When it comes to muscle fatigue, there is a sweet spot where we get the most benefit. If we don’t work out hard enough, we won’t see the results we are hoping for. On the other hand, if we strain our muscles too much, we risk injury and won’t be able to work out at all. The key is to find the optimal level of fatigue—which is typically towards the higher end.

Similarly, when we’re sick or injured, it’s important to find the right balance in our training. If we push ourselves too hard, we risk prolonging our illness or injury. But if we don’t move enough, we won’t get the necessary blood flow to heal as quickly as possible. Again, balance is key.

Of course, finding this balance is easier said than done. It often requires experimentation and listening to our bodies. We need to be mindful of our limitations and not push ourselves too hard too quickly. At the same time, we shouldn’t be too easy on ourselves and miss out on the benefits of pushing our limits.

In the end, our workouts need to be guided by wisdom and common sense. The Shaolin Crane reminds us to find balance in all things, including our fitness routines. By finding the right balance, we can achieve our goals and get up again tomorrow to do so again.

In this blog post, the author reflects on their experience discovering martial arts and how it changed their life for the better. They describe how they were lucky to find a martial arts studio with a community of "real people" who were passionate about Kempo as a way to become healthier, happier, and more well-rounded individuals. The author discusses how this experience shaped their own journey in martial arts and inspired them to create a similar community for others to learn and grow in.

I was extremely fortunate, oh, those many years ago, when I wandered into a martial arts studio for the first time. Fortunate that I found Kempo but more so because I found Sensei Alen—now Master Alen Babayan. Sensei Alen ran a fantastic studio full of interesting people who were inspired and inspiring. What struck me most about the people in Sensei Alen’s studio was that they were real people. They weren’t tough guys or meatheads; no one was training for a full-contact fight in Thailand, and no one had ‘Kempo’ tattooed on his head. They were just ordinary people who had discovered that Kempo was a great way to become healthier, happier, and more well-rounded.

To be honest, I wasn’t yet a real person myself—just a teenager excited about the world he had walked into. I often trained with a lawyer who had kids my age and drove a high-end sports car. One woman, whose son was taller than me, was a Ph.D. and did research that totally went over my head. Another gentleman I worked out with ran a huge electronics distributor. They were all real people. They had jobs and lives, and families and priorities. The only thing we had in common was that Kempo was one of our priorities.

At the time, I didn’t appreciate what I had found. Years later, as I began to teach, meet other instructors, and visit other studios, I realized how rare Sensei Alen’s haven of ‘real’ really was.

That was long ago and on the other side of the ocean. Now I’m a real person too, with a wife and children and my own competing priorities. But Kempo is still one of those priorities—to train, teach, and share what I started learning from Sensei Alen a quarter century ago. The vision I still hold of that haven for real people continues to be our inspiration and motivates us to create that same sort of space where real people can gather to learn and grow.

I am so grateful to Sensei Alen for being who he is and for creating that space for so many of us to learn and grow. And I’m grateful to all of the real people who choose to train with us now. I’m grateful that amidst their jobs, lives, and families, they choose to be part of our haven of real people.
